Certification Options in the Teacher
Training and Continuing Studies Program in the Himalayan
Yoga Tradition include a 200 Hour and a 600 Hour program.

Level One: Whether you enroll in
the 200 Hour or 600 Hour program you will begin with our Level
One curriculum. Each level includes a two-week ashram-style
retreat, a 12-month mentorship, and an extensive Home Study
Program. The topics include Meditation, Raja Yoga, Yoga Sutras,
Philosophy, Hatha Yoga, Pranayama, Anatomy, Yoga Nidra, Psychology,
Holistic Health, and Teaching Methodology. See Curriculum
Highlights for more details. At the completion of Level One the student
is ready to begin teaching at HYT Centers.
200 Hour Certification (Optional): Some
students will complete the HYT-TTP 200 Hour Certification process,
to facilitate teaching yoga at non-HYT locations. The student's
qualification to teach is gained primarily from their personal
practice supported by the home study, mentoring, and training
received at the annual retreat. Upon successful completion of
the 200 Hour required accomplishments the student will
receive an HYT-TTP Certificate.

Level Two: Our 600 Hour program continues
with the Level
Two curriculum. After attending the first level retreat and completing
the home study assignments associated with it, the student will
go through the ten major study areas in a greater depth - Foundation,
Sadhana, Asana, Pranayama, Meditation, Yoga Anatomy & Physiology,
Holistic Health & Biofeedback, Psychology, and Teaching Methodology.
India Retreat (Optional): Before
certification, many students enjoy a short stay at Swami Rama's
Ashram in Rishikesh, India and become an initiate in the Tradition.
Level Three : The student is
now prepared for the synthesis and the integration of what s/he
has studied through the first two levels. The student will learn
to deepen his sadhana and to integrate all the aspects of the
teachings into his daily life. Upon successful completion of
the 600 Hour required accomplishments the student will
receive an HYT-TTP Certificate.
A student's qualification to teach is gained primarily from
personal practice supported by home study, mentoring, and training
received at the annual retreats. Upon successful completion
of these required accomplishments the student will receive an
HYT-TTP Certificate.
- Acquiring 180 credit hours through formal instruction (annual retreat and
mentor contact) in the Himalayan Yoga Meditation Tradition, which includes
25 credit hours of supervised teaching.
- Acquiring 20 credit hours through completion of Home Study assignments (approximately
5 hours of independent study equates to one credit hour).
- Demonstrating skilled yoga teaching (both practice and theory) through a
minimum of 25 credit hours of supervised practical teaching (through contact
with mentor and at annual retreat). A minimum of 5 hours actively teaching
with supervision by mentor.
- Memorization of the HYT foundational Sanskrit recitations.
- Initiation in the Himalayan Yoga Meditative Tradition and receiving a personal
mantra.
- Scoring 80% or better on the Written Exam administered by the student’s mentor.
This objective exam demonstrates mostly academic learning that can be gained
from books and lectures.
- Completing the Take-Home Exam. This essay exam shows learning gained from
one’s personal experience of yoga practices through Home Study.
- Receiving mentor's recommendation for certification, passing
faculty evaluation and receiving blessing by Acharya.
- Having completed all the required accomplishments, students
are eligible for registration through the Yoga Alliance at
the 200-Hour training level.

- Acquiring 540 credit hours through
formal instruction (annual retreat and mentor contact) in
the Himalayan Yoga Meditation Tradition, which includes
50 credit hours of supervised teaching.
- Acquiring 60 credit hours through the completion of Home
Study assignments (approximately 5 hours of independent study
equates to one credit hour).
- Demonstrating skilled yoga teaching (both practice and theory)
through a minimum of 50 hours of supervised practical teaching
(through contact with mentor and at annual retreat). A minimum
of 10 hours actively teaching with supervision by mentor.
- Scoring 80% or better on the Written On-Site Exam. This
objective exam demonstrates mostly academic learning that
can be gained from books and lectures.
- Completing the Take-Home Exam. This essay exam shows learning
gained from one's personal experience of yoga practices through
Home Study.
- Initiation in the Himalayan Yoga Meditative Tradition and
receiving a personal mantra.
- The Memorization of Gayatri and Maha-mrtyunjaya Mantras,
knowing the practice and experiential meaning of them.
- Receiving mentor's recommendation for certification, passing
faculty evaluation and receiving blessing by Acharya.
- Having completed all the required accomplishments and having
taught 100 hours of yoga classes, students are eligible for
registration through the Yoga Alliance at the 500-Hour training
level.
